Kronprins Haakon – icebreaker research vessel

The new icebreaker research vessel, Kronprins Haakon, will be equipped with state-of-the-art scientific instrumentationon. The vessel is classified icebreaker and will  have year-round operation in ice-covered waters.

Kronprins Haakon The new icebreaker research vessel will be a valuable continuator of Norwegian research traditions in the Arctic Illustration: Rolls Royce Marine (RRM)

Kronprins Haakon is scheduled for operation in 2018 and will monitor the environmental state and the climate state of both the Arctic and the Antarctic.

The vessel will be based in Tromsø and will be formally owned by the Norwegian Polar Institute. The Institute of Marine Research will have operational responsibility and the University of Tromsø will be her biggest user.
