The KV Svalbard – an ice class vessel operated by the Norwegian Coastguard is our new home base.
A hardworking flight crew were on round-the-clock standby, this meant the polar bear team could launch the helicopter from the KV Svalbard’s helicopter deck whenever the weather allowed. More valuable transects were flown over the drifting sea ice.
Upstairs on the ship’s bridge the whale watching team were welcomed warmly as always, recording their sightings with hot coffee on hand.
The Norwegian Polar Institute is very grateful to the coastguard for assisting us with the work.
Here is a selection of pictures from aboard the KV Svalbard.
