The Biodiversity and fluxes in glacial arctic fjords (BIODAFF)
Within the framework of BIODAFF, the current project will be undertaken in Kongsfjorden and other fjords on Svalbard. The objective of the project is to study how the biodiviersity of pelagic and benthic communities is structured by steep environmental stress gradients in salinity, sedimentation etc. in arctic glacial fjords. Field studies in 2000 will include zooplankton sampling from R/V 'Oceania' in Kongsfjorden, Isfjorden, Van Mijen fjorden and Hornsund. In addition, collections will be performed by SCUBA divers. Samples will be analysed for community composition, lipids and stable isotopes to determine community structure (trophic levels).
