Maps

The Norwegian Polar Institute is the main authority in charge of the topographic mapping of Svalbard, Jan Mayen and the Norwegian territorial claims in the Antarctic. As Norway's authority on mapping in the Norwegian polar regions, the institute publish both printed and digital maps, and is the main publisher of topographical and geological maps of the Norwegian polar regions.

These maps can be bought directly from the institute and in book stores. In Svalbard they can be found in the Museum store, Svalbardbutikken and other outlets.

Interactive maps

  • Svalbard (topography)
    TopoSvalbard is an interactive topographical map of Svalbard. The portal's main focus is topography, but also show place names, the sheet distribution in the Svalbard 1:100.000 series (S100), updated glacial fronts from sattellite imaging, and the nature preserve zones.
  • Svalbard (themes)
    Svalbardkartet is an interactive themed atlas of Svalbard supplemented with a rich dataset of environmental data layered on top of a detailed topographical base-map equivalent of the main map series Svalbard 1:100.000 (S100).
  • Jan Mayen (topography)
    TopoJanMayen is an interactive topographical map of Jan Mayen.

Polar place names

The Norwegian Polar Institute is also the main authority in regards to place names in the Norwegian polar regions. Decisions on place names in Svalbard, Bjørnøya and Jan Mayen in the north, and Dronning Maud Land, Bouvet Island (Bouvetøya) and Peter I Island (Peter I Øy) in the south, in addition to the surrounding sea, is done in the institutes naming committee.
