ACEX

A biologically brewing Artic Ocean in Middle Eocene: correlation of high productivity intervals in ACEX cores to Barents Sea.

Object: Using sediments recovered during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX) to the Lomonosov Ridge (Arctic Ocean) in August 2004, the aims of this project are: a) to develop the first-ever diatom biostratigraphy for the early Middle Eocene of the Arctic, b) to assess the palaeoenvironments under which these organic and siliceous-rich sediments were deposited, and c) to correlate the ACEX sediments to coeval sediments in the Barents Sea by means of diatom biostratigraphy.

So far we have started to analyse the ACEX sediments only. However, future work will include similar assessment of OD/Statoil Well Barents Sea material to complete the aims. See also the description below for other future work as an extension of these project aims.
