Marine Mammal Sighting Survey (Data Base)

The Norwegian Polar Institute commenced a marine mammal sighting data base for the Svalbard area in 2002. This initiative is on-going.

Sightings of marine mammals are reported by local residents, tour operators’ naturalists, scientific campaigns etc. (Photo-verification of rare species is desirable.) Records for white whales, bowheads and narwhal collected to date are posted on NPI’s MOSJ web-site. Annual updates will be performed.

Records are also kept for all migratory whales, resident and migratory seals and polar bears. Over time this data base is expected to provide a wealth of distributional, phenological (time related) and other information about the marine mammals of Svalbard.
