NPI’s long-term seabird monitoring on Spitsbergen, Svalbard.
NPI’s long-term seabird monitoring will document any changes over time in the seabird community at Spitzbergen.
Seabird counts have been conducted since 1988 at two defined sections on two colonies in the Kongsfjorden area. Since 2005 the survival of Brünnich’s Guillemots, kittiwakes and little auks has also been estimated as part of this ongoing seabird monitoring programme. Time series of data on community structure and detailed demographic data permit the study of demographic processes that are responsible for observed changes in population size and structure (e.g. climate change induced effects). The data is reported to the MOSJ-website. The programme is financed by NPI.
