Geological mapping and regional geological investigations in Nordaustlandet

The Norwegian Polar Institute and the Polar Marine Geological Research Expedition (PMGRE) in St. Petersburg, Russia, have initiated a three year (2007-2009) joint geological mapping program in Nordaustlandet (NE Svalbard). Geological field work in this remote and inaccessible area is logistically demanding and expensive. The project's main objective is to make various geological investigations in Nordaustlandet scientifically, logistically and economically more efficient through strengthening renewed cooperation between Norwegian and Russian geological expeditions, which are permanently active in Svalbard. In addition to collecting geological map data, the field work will focus upon petrological, structural and geochronological studies which will fill in important gaps in the regional knowledge.
