Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN), Part C: upper air sounding (KOL 01)

Since end of 1991, daily radiosoundings are operated at Ny-Ålesund (79 deg. N, 12 deg. E) by the Alfred Wegener Institute. The retrieved vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, (+ once weekly ozone) are used as near real time input for weather forecast via the Global Telecommunicatin System (GTS). By end of 2012, the Ny-Alesund radiosonde program has been certified to contribute to the GCOS Reference Upper-Air Network (GRUAN), relying on very high quality standards for referenced climate studies. Moreover, the upper-air data are an appreciated background information for several scientific projects in Ny-Alesund, e.g. to assess the quality of radiative measurements, and to validate other instruments.
