Areas of interest and expertise
Geology and geosciences:
- Main scientific disciplines: structural geology, stratigraphy, geological mapping.
- Participated in total 18 polar expeditions (16 out of these to Svalbard, 1 to Antarctica, 1 to Eastern North Greenland), most of the Svalbard expeditions as field leader.
- Chairman of Committee on the Stratigraphy of Svalbard 1990-2007.
- Member of Norwegian Committee on Stratigraphy 1989-2007.
- Norwegian representative of the ISIRA (International Science Initiative in the Russian Arctic) Group under IASC (International Arctic Science Committee), since 2002.
- Experience with geo-science-related management issues from project work for the Ministry of Environment (Norway) and the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Experience with Arctic indigenous peoples’ issues, particularly from the following activities:
- Project leader for “Indigenous peoples of the northern part of the Russian Federation and their environment” within INSROP (International Northern Sea Route Programme), 1996-1999.
- Developed and carried out IPY project MODIL-NAO (“Monitoring of development of traditional indigenous land use areas of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, NW Russia"), endorsed by IPY Joint Committee (2007-2010).
- Initiated and established ANSIPRA (Arctic Network for the Support of the Indigenous Peoples of the Russian Arctic) in 1998 and run its secretariat (discontinued since 2007). Editor of ANSIPRA Bulletin 1998-2007.
