Satellite Remote Sensing of Atmosphere-Surface Systems and Ground Truth Measurements

It is proposed to collect data for construction of (1) bio-optical models for coastal waters, (2) snow-ice optical property models, (3) aerosol optical property models, and (4) surface albedo models, and to use these models to further develop and improve satellite remote sensing tools that can be used to retrieve accurate information about the Earth System for inclusion in and improvement of Earth System Models (ESMs). Reliable satellite monitoring of highly productive aquatic ecosystems is currently lacking, and tools to provide such reliable monitoring will be important for obtaining improved ESMs that can aid decision makers in their efforts to facilitate the adaptation of ecosystems to climate change, and to mitigate negative impacts on managed and natural terrestrial and coastal water ecosystems.
