Model of the thermal structure of a polythermal tidewater glacier

Climatic changes cause changes in the glacier surface energy balance. They effect the hydro-thermal structure of glaciers. Main objective of the project is a model of the thermal structure of a polythermal tidewater glacier. The most important problem is origin and contemporary evolution of the glacier thermal and hydrological structure and consequences of the evolution for dynamic glacial processes (fast flow, meltwater, calving intensity). Hansbreen is one of the well studied glaciers of Svalbard. Long term monitoring of the glacier (i.e. mass balance, geometry changes, dynamics: velocity and calving fux) has been widening by measurements of ice temperature in four locations and energy balance of the ELA. Amundsenisen and Werenskioldbreen are additional areas of studies.
